Frances Furmaniak Obituary

Frances Furmaniak, age 101, passed away April 2, 2023.

Frances was the beloved wife of the late Kazimier Fumaniak; loving mother of Laura (Medard) Kaluszaka, John (Barbara) Furmaniak, and Thomas Furmaniak; devoted grandmother of Denise, Kevin, Mary Beth, Kristan, and Brian; proud great-grandmother of 10; and great-great grandmother of 3.

Frances lived through a lot of hardship in her life. She had to endure the Ukrainian Holocaust and survive the German Labor Camp System. She started a brand new life here in the USA. After arriving, her family lived in Hamtramck, Michigan, where she stayed for over 75 years. She attended Our Lady Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, where she also lovingly and proudly volunteered her time and energy as a cook in the church soup kitchen. She also had a stint of time where she owned her own restaurant. Frances was not formally schooled but was very intelligent and wise, having learned 4 languages over the years. She was also a military mom, currently with 4 veterans and 1 active military in her life, it was one of the many things she was proudest of. She has family all over the world including, the USA, France, Poland, Russia, Algeria, and England. When she could, she loved to travel. She went to Africa to visit a long lost sister. She also went to Alaska, Yosemite National Park, and Poland among her favorite trips. But don't forget about her many trips to the casinos with the "seniors". Frances was an animal lover, heaping her love onto her dog, Sam. She even trained him to understand Polish. She absolutely loved, loved, loved to cook and garden. Everyone wanted her pierogies - "pinch, pinch". In her spare time, when not at church or volunteering, she would sit and relax and work on her latest project in sewing, crocheting, or knitting. She would make one afghan after another. Never forget that she loved her Tiger's Baseball. She never missed a game, always listening to the incomparable, Ernie Harwell.
