Norbert "Clem" Chmielarczyk, a devoted husband, father, and community servant, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born on November 23, 1934, in Michigan to Peter and Sophie Chmielarczyk. Norbert lived a life marked by dedication to his family, faith, and service, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by many.
Norbert's career as an Installer at Western Electric and AT&T spanned an impressive 43 years, a testament to his steadfast work ethic and commitment. His talents went beyond his profession; he was an active member of the St. Bonaventure Secular Franciscan Order, professing on November 16, 1986. For 28 years, he served at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen as the “Admiral of the Tubs,” where his influence reached far beyond keeping pots and pans gleaming. There, he forged many friendships with the residents, quietly embodying the Gospel and the Franciscan charism through his kindness and compassion. Norbert was also an active parish member at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church since its founding in 1963. He served as an usher, catechism teacher, Eucharistic minister, festival worker, and at funeral Mass service.
A proud veteran, Norbert served as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne during the Korean War Era, where he distinguished himself by completing 16 jumps. He enlisted in 1953 and honorably discharged on August 1, 1961, embodying the valor and commitment to service that characterized his life.
In addition to his military and professional accomplishments, Norbert was deeply involved in Scouting. He shared his passion for the great outdoors and leadership with countless youth, earning accolades such as the St. George Emblem, Wood Badge, Ed Crowe Award, and the Silver Beaver Award. His influence enriched the lives of many young men and women, helping to shape them into responsible and caring adults.
Norbert is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Chmielarczyk, whose companionship was a source of strength throughout their years together. He leaves behind his cherished children: Barbara Stachowski, Diane (Alex) Afelt, Vincent (Joan Carrellas) Chmielarczyk, Janet (Harold) Klemm, Beverly Chmielarczyk, Matthew (Sarah Hope) Chmielarczyk, and Thomas (Allison) Chmielarczyk. He is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Joseph Chmielarczyk; grandson, Jesse Stuart; and siblings Adele Counsil and Joseph Chmielarczyk. Norbert’s parents, Peter and Sophie Chmielarczyk, also welcomed him back to their arms.
