Maria Poyiatzis

Maria Poyiatzis, a beloved matriarch and cherished soul, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 19, 2025, at the age of 88 in Warren, Michigan. Born on November 23, 1936, in Battipaglia, Italy, Maria's journey led her to become a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose legacy will forever resonate within the hearts of her family.

Maria was a kind and sweet woman whose devotion to her family was paramount. She lived her life for the sake of her children and grandchildren, nurturing her love for them that grew deeper with each passing generation. Her family will always cherish memories of making pasta together and the laughter shared during weekend sleepovers at Nonna's house, where her warmth filled the air.

A dedicated member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Clawson, Michigan, Maria's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She embodied the spirit of kindness and compassion, affecting everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Her garden was a testament to her nurturing nature; an avid gardener, Maria had a remarkable ability to thrive flora. She delighted in watching butterflies and hummingbirds flit about her vibrant yard, creating a sanctuary that reflected her love for nature's beauty.

Maria leaves behind her loving son, Kostas "Gus" Poyiatzis, her daughters, Elena (Mike) Sarris, Elizabeth "Lisa" (Brian) Penney, and her adored grandchildren: Katarina (Sadiol) Destani, Nicoletta (Allen) Wruble, Russel (Fallon) Noell, Rebecca Noell, Rachel Noell. Additionally, she celebrated the joys of her great-grandchildren: Lianna, Marina, Panayiotis, Leonidas, Alessandra, Rosalie, Rex, and Felix, who were graced by her gentle presence and warmth.

As we celebrate Maria’s life, we remember those who have passed before her, including her beloved husband, Nicos Poyiatzis, her parents, Antonio and Roselia Casillo, and her younger sister, Carmelina. Their spirits will join in remembrance as her loved ones gather to honor her legacy.

The services to commemorate Maria will be held at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 581 E.14 Mile Road, Clawson, Michigan, on Friday, April 25, 2025. The instate visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, bringing family and friends together to celebrate a life rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Maria Poyiatzis will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever live on through the many lives she touched and the love she cultivated in the world around her.
